McLoughlin House in Oregon City

The McLoughlin House was the home of Dr. John McLoughlin, the Hudson's Bay Company official who also founded the Oregon City settlement.

The house

Wikipedia says the house was built in 1845 and that McLoughlin lived there from 1846 until his death in 1857. It first stood on the Willamette River waterfront. After preservationists saved it from demolition in 1909, it was moved in 1910 to the bluff overlooking downtown, and the Barclay House was moved beside it in 1930.

Who looks after it

The National Park Service says the house joined the National Park System in 2003 as a unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It says NPS staff and volunteers run tours, talks and demonstrations, and it sends visitors to the neighboring Barclay House and the Fort Vancouver site for visiting details. The McLoughlin Memorial Association, a nonprofit established in 1909, preserves and teaches local history and lists school field trips and events on its site. Call or check the sites for current tour hours.
